The cottage in which we are staying is located just on the outskirts of the town of Chester. Chester is a bit of a crown jewel in the cottage areas and tourist-oriented towns found on the south shore.
Apparently, it is the most high-end and sought-after residential area in the communities found in the area south of Halifax. The homes are beautiful, and apparently the prices are amongst the highest in the province.
Having spent a fair amount of time in the town this year I feel that I need to start buying lottery tickets so we can afford a summer residence here. J You will probably understand why as you go through these pictures.
The Love-goddess had decided that she wanted to go into Chester for an extended walk around town. I decided that I would like to drive around and gain a broad overview of what the town was like, so I offered to drive her in.
The photos in this post, and others in this series, are best enjoyed on a desktop/laptop or in horizontal view on your iPad. There is an issue looking at them on cellphones which I am trying to get resolved.
As soon as I dropped her off I swung down onto this waterfront street and quickly encountered what surely would become my favourite watering hole if I lived in Chester, The Rope Loft. I immediately decided that I would have to bring the Love-goddess back here for a refreshing adult beverage on the patio after I retrieved her after her walk. 🙂
When I picked her up her first words to me were “do you want to go have a beer?”. I smiled and said, “I have just the place”. The oceanside patio at The Rope Loft.
Waiting patiently for our beers to arrive. Not a terrible place to have to wait.
And if you’re having a quick beer, why not have a quick half pound of mussels.
The view across the inlet from the pub. A long line of absolutely charming waterfront and water view properties.
As I was doing my drive around town I came upon this old cemetery. Some of my ashes might just have to come here… not anytime soon I’m hoping. 🙂
Most of the dense residential part of the town has streets lined with houses like these.
I immediately fell in love with this florist shop when I came upon it. Built in a style that you often see in very old European houses, the second floor built wider than the first floor. In Europe this was done because houses had to maintain a certain distance apart to allow carriages and horses to move through the city. Above carriage height of the you could expand your house outward.
There are many old elegant, frame churches in town.
A simple traditional cedar shake house.
The photo of these two houses was taken directly across the inlet from where The Rope Block sits. These are just to the right of the pub. I include them because both are for sale. The white one is listed at just over $5 million and the one on the left is listed for just over $3 million… a possible bargain. LOL! I told you it was an expensive town.
Everywhere you drive or walk around the town you come across these picture postcard views.
There is one peninsula with limited access where these enormous, stately New England style waterfront homes are sheltered behind hedges. It is hard, or even impossible, to get a picture of most.
The second one was so hidden I had to find a gap in the hedge to get even a glimpse of it. Sorry about intruding folks.
And yes, there are lots of restaurants and shops. I believe this is a favourite local pub.
I purchased a lovely piece of glass folk art at the Chez Glass Lass shop. It is being shipped to our home… Sorry no picture.
Included amongst the shops near the glass place was the local Tanner Brewery retail outlet. We had to stop and have a flight. 🙂
Golfers, Chester is definitely the place for you. The local, relatively inexpensive golf club has several stunning holes along the ocean.
