Bonnie-Jeanne MacDonald and Mitch Frazer argue for the use of VPLAs in for use Canada. Austrilian firm QSuper is offering a “lifetime pension income option based on the variable payout life annuity (VPLA) in the University of British Columbia (UBC) faculty pension plan.” Currently, this is not allowed in Canada… UBC got in before the cutoff I suppose. It would address the needs of people who have defined contribution pension plans to draw down their funds more along the lines of a defined benefit pension plan.
