In the Camera’s Eye … Madrid’s “La Campana’s” Calamari Sandwich

Starting our second full day one of our most important goals was to get ourselves over to “La Campana” restaurant just off the Plaza Mayor and pick up one of their incredible calamari bocadillo sandwiches for lunch. Yes, this is now officially a ritual anytime we are in Madrid. We checked out this place the last time we were here because I saw someone raving about it on a YouTube video. AND THEY ONLY COST €4.00!!!

The calamari sandwich is a Madrid tradition, so this place is not alone in selling them. One of the reasons it is considered amongst the best, along with their incredibly tasty approach to cooking the calamari, is that they use very soft buns, so the whole thing provides a delightfully soft, chewy, and incredibly tasty experience. Most bocadillo sandwiches are served on a crustier bun.

“In the Camera’s Eye” presents fast and furious snippets of things that have grabbed my attention… for whatever reason. I will be attempting to capture the essence of what I am sharing in no more than two paragraphs and 10 or fewer photos with captions.”

This photo is from a visit last year. I forgot when taking pictures this year to make sure I included the name of the restaurant.

This year the lineup of people waiting to get to eat inside was even longer than last year… So long it had to be shown in two photographs. 🙂

The back of the line.

The Love-goddess (arrow) is waiting in the “PARA LLEVAR line… Translation, “Take Away”. You don’t experience the charm of eating in the restaurant, but you do get your food much quicker.

Just one couple ahead of us now!

We made it! The server is waiting for our second sandwich to be prepared.

It is a thing of beauty!

The ultimate Madrid eating-in-the-street experience. Noshing our calamari sandwiches while sitting on one of the circular bases of one of the light standards in the Plaza Mayor.

Some things never change. Street vendors selling knock-off luxury goods.

The Love-goddess did not quite finish her bocadillo so later we paused in the Puerta del Sol so she could enjoy the last bit. The centre building is our hotel.
