Biking in Europe #2 … The Photographic Evidence

To further help paint the picture of what’s involved in doing a bicycle tour around Lake Constance I thought you might enjoy seeing a group of photos from our journey. I have arranged them in chronological order to provide you with a sense of how the trip flows. If you are looking at this collection on your phone you will need to rotate it to horizontal view to see them properly.

That said, I don’t think that the pictures fully capture what an interesting area this is. Hopefully, you will still end up with a reasonable feel for what the region and the experience are like.

What they will show you is a number of things that you should be aware of when planning a tour. First and foremost, is how we were dressed … in layers. We normally headed out from our hotels at around 10 in the morning, and it was often a little cool as the day began. The ride did take place over the last week of September and the first week of October, so that was to be expected. Even though every day warmed up, having it be a bit on the cooler side is better for bike riding. You just need to be prepared to remove clothing as the day progresses. You will have saddlebags in which to store things.

The photos should also give you a sense of what the weather was like. You will notice that most days were partially sunny/cloudy, with only our last day on the road providing any worry about rain at all. Again, I think this is pretty typical for the end of September.

You will also see that there aren’t other bicyclists in any of the photos. Nor did we come across any. Apparently, this is one seriously busy bike trail in the Summer, but at the end of September not so much. Fall is definitely a good time to do a trip like this.

One other thing you should take note of, is that three people were wearing helmets, and one was not… me. I decided that I didn’t want to lug my bike helmet all over Europe, so I planned on buying one once I got to Constance. Unfortunately, bike helmets proved to be much more costly than what I wanted to spend, so I risked riding without one. This is not a good idea. If you go, make sure you take your own bike helmet … and gloves … with you.

And finally, a big thanks and shout out to Bob and Patty for going on this adventure with us, and for letting me use some of your photos. We would be happy to go anywhere with you guys.
