This trip is divided into two parts. First, we toured some of the interesting parts of Nova Scotia that we have enjoyed before in the hopes that the “Travel Companions” would find them just as interesting as we do.
The second part of the trip is a weeklong stay at a lovely oceanfront cottage that we have rented in the Chester Basin called “Three Sheeps to the Wind“. We have rented many properties online around the world and I do have to admit that this is amongst the best.
Melissa, the owner has been an outstanding host. Over the years I have frequently told folks that a woman in Dublin, Ireland was head and shoulders the best host we have ever had the privilege of renting from. If she is 1A then definitely Melissa is 1B.
Not only was the cottage fantastic but the amount of information and amenities that Melissa provided were outstanding. The documentation she provided was clear and concise, and she even went the extra mile and carefully labeled items with brief explanations for renters use.
Great job Melissa! There is a good chance we will be looking to rent your property again… unless I can convince the Love-goddess to buy our own oceanfront property in Chester. 🙂 Here is a link to the Three Sheep’s website. Most of the photos used in this post are from their website… they’re of much better quality than I could’ve produced with my iPhone.
The photos in this post, and others in this series, are best enjoyed on a desktop/laptop or in horizontal view on your iPad. There is an issue looking at them on cellphones which I am trying to get resolved.
Photo of the back of the cottage. I believe it is something of a Saltbox design.
And yes, I was actually there in case you think I just copied pictures from the site and posted them without actually being there. 🙂
The main living area. Beautifully appointed, and with lots of seating. I often find with online rentals the places you end up getting do not have enough comfortable seating for four adults.
The kitchen island and dining banquette provide of lots of seating for dining.
The kitchen was well appointed with all of the necessary appliances and kitchen tools. The owner also made spices and condiments available so we did not have to worry about going out and chasing them down before we could start to prepare meals.
I loved the fact that the stairwell was open. It really opened up the whole space.
The master bedroom. Bright and cherry with a queen size bed.
There was a small balcony off of the master bedroom where you could sit and enjoy a morning coffee on nice days.
The second bedroom also had a queen size bed with a sliding partition so you can look out through the house and the large front windows to the ocean and beyond. Again, the bed was very comfortable. There is a third bedroom that is not pictured. It contains two twin beds.
The main bathroom on the top floor was well very functional.
The main floor powder room has a very interesting sink somewhat like a laundry tub. I could see this being very useful in the summer when you are bringing in wet towels and things from outside.
There is a well-maintained hot tub on site, but we did not bother to use it.
However, we did use this fabulous fire pit on a lower patio area. As you can see it is an old wood-burning stove with a chimney. Ideal for areas that may be at risk of forest fire. Should’ve taken pictures of our fire.
The main deck off of the main floor level. Spectacular views out across the Chester Basin. What an incredibly wonderful place to hang out and watch the tides role in and out.
I took this picture on October 1. This is pretty much how the weather and ocean presented themselves to us during our stay, sunny and calm. Absolutely beautiful with fabulous sunsets.
This is looking to our right from the dock. At the end of the basin you can see a grey building at the waters edge. Just to the right of it are the umbrellas of a local restaurant, the Seaside Shanty, where we ate a couple of times. Not much better in life than sitting out on a patio on the side of the ocean chomping down on lobster and mussels.
You are probably wondering how the cottage ended up being named. “Three Sheeps to the Wind“. This might be the reason. Looking out the side window we could watch these little guys patrolling up and down the hill all week long. There is a small farm beside the property. They also had a few ducks wandering around and the guy in the next photo…
… An Emu… for whatever reason??? 🙂
The “Love-goddess” and our “Travel Companions” hanging out in the living room. Robert is holding up his phone showing a picture of the Mackerel he caught fishing off of the wharf. I thought he was kidding when he told he had reeled one in… my bad. 🙂
And yes, to confirm I was actually inside the house as well. With apologies to all conspiracy theorist who assumed I was never really there. 🙂
The sun sets on our stay at the at Three Sheeps to the Wind. Fantastic home in a fantastic location. I expect to be back.
