In the Camera’s Eye … Wintering in Spain 2025 – Hiking Opportunities at Estepona and On the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol in Spain is not just about beaches—it also offers some fantastic hiking opportunities. The region has a mix of coastal walks, mountain trails, and scenic routes through natural parks. I don’t do it myself, but I know it is a major go-to activity for many people. And today I’d like to tell you about a beauty hike right here near Estepona called “apparently March is officially Irish heritage month in Canada. It’s all about me.” (The Royal Trail) that takes you up the highest local mountain “Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja” (The Royals of Sierra Bermeja). “Los Reales” reaches 1,449 meters (4,754 feet) above sea level. It offers amazing panoramic views of the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar, and even Morocco on clear days.

I would be remiss if I did not point out some of the other top hiking trails on the Costa. They are listed here along with the municipality where they are located and a brief description of what they are famous for where possible:
1. Caminito del Rey (Village of El Chorro) – Most famous hike on the Costa
2. Parque Natural Montes de Málaga (Near Málaga) – A Spanish natural park
3. El Torcal de Antequera – (Antequera) Unique limestone rock formations
4. La Concha (Marbella) – Classic Coastal Views
5. La Ruta del Río Chillar (Nerja) – Walk up a river

“In the Camera’s Eye” presents fast and furious snippets of things that have grabbed my attention… for whatever reason. I will be attempting to capture the essence of what I am sharing in no more than two paragraphs and 10 or fewer photos with captions. The photos used here were taken by friends, Joan and Bruce, or were found on other identified sources.”

Thar she blows! Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja (The Royals of Sierra Bermeja). The mountain is Los Reales and the mountain range is Sierra Bermeja.

The Love-goddess’ former colleague Joan, and her husband Bruce getting close to the top. Way to go!

From Google Maps – A better picture of the trail leading upwards from where Joan and Bruce were standing.

From Sur Newspaper – A trail marker on the way up

Looking down and across Estepona to the Mediterranean. You still can’t see Africa on the other side, even from this elevation… it is over 40 km away at this point.

What a view, what a view, what a view! Easy to see why people want to climb this mountain.

From Google Maps – An official viewing point … near the peak, I assume.

Zooming in on Gibraltar, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

And now the truth behind this particular outing. 🙂 Joan and Bruce were driven up the mountain on this twisty, scary access road by their Airbnb host. They only had to climb a bit at the end.
Bruce’s short video of the drive up. Given my personal aversion to heights, there is no way I’m ever doing this. LOL!
